Author Note: Okay, so here's the thing. When dmzasylum presented me with the the pairing of Pepper Potts/Hank McCoy in this meme, my brain came up with an semi-AU that is an alternate M-Day/Civil War scenario where Tony still leads the pro side and Cap still leads the the anti side, but Pepper left Tony because she couldn't watch him self-destruct and strongly disagreed with some of his methods and took a job, initially, helping the X-Men with PR. Naturally, there are elements of marvel_united too, but it shouldn't be seen to be taken place in that universe. More like a parallell universe to both MU and 616!canon. Without giving anything away, I borrow heavily from the Civil War storyline towards the the end, but make it my own. I also borrow from The Civil War What if? as well. Don't sue me. This is just a belated birthday present for a friend.

Bobby was content to watch the game, taking occasional pulls from his beer, until the answering machine's light flashing red in his periprhal vision started to annoy the fuck out him.

Scowling slightly--it was probably gonna be some shit credit collector, reminding him they still had his balls in a vice 'til he paid 'em--he pressed play. Uncharacteristically, his brother's voice filtered through the recorder.

The last time Jerry had called him had been on his birthday, and they hadn't talked then.

"Bobby..." Jerry's voice started, then stopped, as he cleared his throat. It was as if he was talking around a lump in his throat, and that made Bobby tense. "Somethin' happened. The other night, Ma, she..."

The rest of the message was lost on Bobby as he listened to Jerry describe how Evelyn had been shot--murdered--in a corner store robbery.

Cold shock washed over him.

Evelyn Mercer was a fucking saint, in his book and everyone else's.

She'd also been the only woman to ever give a damn about what happened to him.

Tears stung his eyes and the cold shock he felt was slowly replaced by burning anger.

He was going to kill those motherfuckers.
